Valley of the kings

Valley of the kings

The royal necropolis of New Kingdom Egypt, known as the Valley of the Kings (KV), is one of the most important and celebrated-archaeological sites in the world. On the West Bank of the Nile, across from modern Luxor, cut into the Theban Hills, lies the Valley of the Kings (KV). The valley became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, called the Great Necropolis of Millions of Years of Pharaoh, or the Place of Truth,The Valley, known as Biban el-Muluk, "doorway or gateway of the kings.

It was used as the burial place for the kings of the New Kingdom (about 1550-1070 BC) from as early as the reign of Thutmose I (about 1504-1492 BC). The last tomb to be constructed was that of Ramesses XI (about 1126-1108 BC), but it is likely that the tomb was not used, and that he was buried near Piramesse, the Ramesside capital.

The Valley of the Kings stands on the west bank of the Nile, across from modern Luxor. It contains at least 63 tombs, such as Thutmose III, Ramesses VI, Ramesses IX, Siptah and Ramesses IV tombs . The Valley of the Kings had tombs for the favorite nobles and the wives and children of both the nobles and pharaohs. Also including that of King Tutankhamun, which was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. Some members of the archaeological teams led by Carter and others contracted local lethal viruses through food or animals resulting in the infamous "Curse of The Pharaohs".

The tombs consisted of a series of rock-cut corridors and chambers, and were decorated with images of the king being accepted into the company of the gods, as well as with scenes from various funerary books. Even the tombs that were raided by grave robbers are still magnificent. The tombs contain unique examples of funerary decoration. Their interiors are lined with colorful paintings and hieroglyphs. The tombs are open to the public on rotation to protect them from damage caused by the presence of visitors, so access depends on when you visit.
